The Phosphorus Serum test measures the concentration of inorganic phosphorus in your pet’s blood, playing a critical role in evaluating bone health, kidney function, and metabolic disorders in dogs and cats. Phosphorus works closely with calcium to maintain strong bones and teeth, support energy metabolism, and regulate cellular function.

Elevated serum phosphorus (hyperphosphatemia) in dogs and cats is most commonly associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD), hypoparathyroidism, or excessive dietary intake. In cats with CKD, phosphorus control is especially critical — high phosphorus accelerates kidney damage and shortens survival time. Conversely, low phosphorus (hypophosphatemia) can impair red blood cell integrity, neuromuscular function, and oxygen delivery.
