What Is the Serum Amylase Test?

Amylase is a digestive enzyme produced mainly by the pancreas and salivary glands. Under normal conditions, only small amounts circulate in the blood. When the pancreas is inflamed (pancreatitis) or damaged, large amounts are released into the bloodstream, causing elevated serum amylase levels. This test is part of the standard serum biochemistry panel in dogs.
