Description

The LDL Cholesterol test measures low-density lipoprotein levels in your pet’s blood. Dogs and cats are fundamentally different from humans in their lipid metabolism — they are HDL-dominant species, meaning LDL levels are naturally low and LDL-related cardiovascular disease is rare in healthy pets.

However, elevated LDL in dogs and cats can indicate significant underlying conditions. Increased LDL concentrations have been observed in obese cats and dogs with metabolic diseases. Hypercholesterolemia combined with elevated LDL may be associated with nephrotic syndrome, hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus, or hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s disease) in dogs.

The LDL test is often ordered alongside total cholesterol, HDL, and triglycerides to create a complete lipid profile. The Total Cholesterol-to-HDL ratio remains the most clinically useful lipid marker in veterinary patients, but LDL measurement provides additional metabolic insight, especially in pets with suspected endocrine disorders or liver disease.
