Book a Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) test for your dog or cat at home in Hyderabad. Key kidney function marker that also screens for liver disease, dehydration, and protein disorders.

Description

The Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) test measures the amount of urea nitrogen in the blood, a waste product formed in the liver from protein metabolism and excreted by the kidneys. BUN is one of the most important and commonly used tests for evaluating kidney function in dogs and cats.

Elevated BUN (azotemia) in dogs and cats indicates decreased kidney function, but BUN must be interpreted carefully because it is also influenced by non-renal factors such as high dietary protein intake, gastrointestinal bleeding, dehydration, liver disease (decreased BUN), and reduced muscle mass. An 8–12 hour fast before blood collection is recommended to avoid postprandial increases.

BUN should always be interpreted alongside serum creatinine and urine specific gravity (USG) for accurate assessment. High BUN with dilute urine (USG <1.030 in dogs, <1.035 in cats) strongly supports kidney disease. High BUN with concentrated urine may indicate pre-renal azotemia from dehydration. Low BUN may indicate liver insufficiency, severe malnutrition, or protein-losing conditions.

At Home Petcare offers at-home BUN testing for dogs and cats in Hyderabad. Our certified veterinary professionals collect blood samples from your pet at home, with results from a trusted diagnostic laboratory to guide kidney health monitoring and treatment.
