Description

The Chloride Serum test measures the concentration of chloride, the major extracellular anion in the blood. Chloride works closely with sodium and bicarbonate to maintain fluid balance, osmolarity, and acid-base homeostasis in dogs and cats.

Abnormal chloride levels provide important diagnostic clues. Hypochloremia (low chloride) is the most common electrolyte abnormality in dogs and cats with congestive heart failure (CHF), occurring in 24% of cases, and is associated with more severe disease and higher diuretic requirements. It is also seen with vomiting, diuretic therapy, and metabolic alkalosis. Hyperchloremia (elevated chloride) is typically seen with dehydration, diarrhea, kidney disease, diabetes, and urinary obstruction.

Serum chloride must always be interpreted alongside sodium and bicarbonate. A corrected chloride value helps evaluate acid-base disorders more accurately — if the corrected chloride and bicarbonate are not tracking together, it signals an additional metabolic acid-base disturbance.
