Serum Triglycerides Test for Dogs & Cats

The Serum Triglycerides test measures the level of triglycerides (blood fats) in your pet’s serum. Triglycerides are a type of lipid (fat) that circulates in the bloodstream after a meal or is stored in fat tissue for energy. Elevated serum triglycerides, a condition known as hypertriglyceridemia or hyperlipidemia, can indicate a variety of underlying conditions in dogs and cats and may increase the risk of serious complications including pancreatitis, eye problems, and neurological symptoms.

Why Is This Test Important?

Hyperlipidemia is common in certain dog breeds (e.g., Miniature Schnauzers) and can also be secondary to conditions like hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus, pancreatitis, Cushing’s disease, and kidney disease. In dogs, triglycerides over 150 mg/dL are considered elevated; in cats, levels over 100 mg/dL warrant concern. Because serum triglycerides rise significantly after a meal, the test should ideally be performed after a 12–18 hour fast. Diagnosing and managing hyperlipidemia helps prevent pancreatitis and other lipid-related complications in pets.

When Is This Test Recommended?

• Suspected pancreatitis or a history of pancreatitis
• Visible lipemia (cloudy, white-tinged blood sample)
• Diabetic pets on monitoring
• Suspected hypothyroidism or Cushing’s disease
• Obesity or high-fat diet history
• Certain breeds prone to hyperlipidemia (Miniature Schnauzers, Beagles)

Understanding Your Results

Normal fasting triglycerides in dogs are typically 50–150 mg/dL; in cats, 50–100 mg/dL. Mild elevations after fasting may indicate primary or secondary hyperlipidemia. Severely elevated values (>500 mg/dL) significantly increase pancreatitis risk. Your veterinarian will assess results alongside other bloodwork to determine the underlying cause and appropriate management.
