Description

Kidney Function Test (KFT) for Dogs & Cats

The Kidney Function Test (KFT), also known as the Renal Function Panel, is a comprehensive blood test that evaluates how well your pet’s kidneys are working. The KFT typically includes multiple markers such as Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN/Urea), Creatinine, Uric Acid, Electrolytes (Sodium, Potassium), and may also include Phosphorus. Together, these parameters provide a thorough assessment of kidney health and help detect chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury (AKI), and other renal conditions in dogs and cats.

Why Is This Test Important?

Kidney disease is one of the most common and serious conditions affecting dogs and cats, particularly as they age. The kidneys must lose 75% or more of their function before serum creatinine and BUN become significantly elevated, meaning clinical signs may not appear until considerable kidney damage has already occurred. Regular kidney function testing — especially for senior pets — is critical for early detection and management. By identifying problems before they become severe, treatment can slow progression and improve quality of life.

Parameters Typically Included

  • Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN/Urea) — Primary marker for kidney filtration
  • Creatinine — Reflects muscle-to-kidney filtration capacity
  • Uric Acid — Supplementary liver and kidney function marker
  • Electrolytes (Sodium, Potassium) — Regulate fluid balance and cellular function
  • Phosphorus — Critical in CKD management

When Is This Test Recommended?

  • Routine senior wellness bloodwork (dogs and cats over 7 years)
  • Pre-surgical screening
  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Vomiting, weight loss, poor appetite
  • Monitoring pets already diagnosed with kidney disease
  • Before starting any nephrotoxic medications

Understanding Your Results

Elevated BUN and creatinine together indicate reduced kidney filtration. Your veterinarian will interpret results in combination with a urinalysis and SDMA (Symmetric Dimethylarginine, a more sensitive early kidney marker) for a complete kidney health picture. Early stage CKD can be managed effectively with dietary changes, hydration support, and regular monitoring.
