The Total Cholesterol test measures the overall concentration of cholesterol in your pet’s blood, including all lipoprotein fractions. Unlike in humans, dogs and cats are HDL-dominant species, meaning high-density lipoprotein (HDL) constitutes the majority of their circulating cholesterol. This means cholesterol-related cardiovascular risks differ significantly between pets and people.

Elevated total cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) in dogs is most commonly caused by hypothyroidism, nephrotic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s disease), cholestasis, and pancreatitis. High cholesterol in cats is primarily associated with cholestasis (bile duct obstruction or liver disease). Decreased cholesterol may indicate liver insufficiency, malabsorption, or protein-losing enteropathy.
