Serum Sodium Test for Dogs & Cats

The Serum Sodium test measures the concentration of sodium (Na⁺) in your pet’s blood. Sodium is the primary extracellular electrolyte in the body and plays a crucial role in regulating fluid balance, blood pressure, nerve signal transmission, and muscle function in dogs and cats. Abnormal serum sodium levels — either too high (hypernatremia) or too low (hyponatremia) — can indicate serious underlying health problems and require prompt veterinary attention.

Why Is This Test Important?

Sodium imbalances in pets can arise from a wide variety of conditions. Hyponatremia (low sodium) is commonly associated with Addison’s disease (hypoadrenocorticism), heart disease, kidney disease, and excessive water intake. Hypernatremia (high sodium) is most often caused by dehydration. Because sodium is closely linked to hydration status and many organ systems, serum sodium is almost always evaluated alongside potassium as part of an electrolyte panel. The sodium-to-potassium ratio is particularly important in diagnosing Addison’s disease in dogs.

When Is This Test Recommended?

• Vomiting, diarrhea, or suspected dehydration
• Suspected Addison’s disease (especially with low Na and high K)
• Heart disease or kidney disease monitoring
• Neurological signs (seizures, disorientation)
• Pets on IV fluid therapy
• Routine senior wellness bloodwork

Understanding Your Results

Normal serum sodium in dogs is approximately 140–155 mEq/L, and in cats, 145–158 mEq/L. Low sodium typically prompts investigation for Addison’s disease, kidney disease, or excessive free water intake. High sodium is most often corrected with fluid therapy. Rapid correction of sodium imbalances must be done carefully to prevent cerebral edema.
