Random Blood Glucose Test for Dogs & Cats

The Random Blood Glucose test measures blood sugar levels in your pet at any time of day, regardless of when they last ate. This test is a quick and effective way to screen for abnormal blood glucose levels and is commonly used to detect hyperglycemia (high blood sugar, as in diabetes mellitus) or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) in dogs and cats. Unlike fasting or postprandial tests, the random glucose test does not require any specific preparation.

Why Is This Test Important?

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common endocrine disorders in pets, particularly in middle-aged to older cats and dogs. The normal blood glucose concentration in dogs and cats is approximately 75–120 mg/dL. Stress can cause transient hyperglycemia in cats, so multiple measurements or a fructosamine test may be needed for definitive diagnosis. Understanding Your Results

A random blood glucose above 200 mg/dL in dogs, or persistently above 270 mg/dL in cats alongside clinical signs, is suggestive of diabetes mellitus. Low glucose (<60 mg/dL) may indicate insulinoma, severe infection, liver disease, or prolonged fasting. Results should be interpreted alongside clinical signs and further diagnostic tests as needed.
