Description

SGPT / ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase) Liver Test for Dogs & Cats

SGPT (Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase), also known as ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase), is the most important and liver-specific enzyme used to detect liver cell damage in dogs and cats. This blood test measures the activity of ALT in the serum. Because ALT is found in the highest concentrations within liver cells (hepatocytes), elevated levels in the bloodstream are a reliable indicator of hepatocellular injury or inflammation in pets.

Why Is This Test Important?

ALT is released into the bloodstream when liver cells are damaged or die. In dogs and cats, the ALT test is considered the most sensitive marker for liver damage, making it an essential component of any routine blood panel or liver disease workup. Unlike in humans, ALT is highly liver-specific in dogs and cats — meaning elevated ALT almost always points to a problem within the liver itself. Detecting elevated ALT early allows for timely intervention before significant liver damage occurs.

When Is This Test Recommended?

  • Routine wellness blood panels for senior dogs and cats
  • Pre-anesthetic bloodwork before surgery
  • Suspected hepatitis, liver inflammation, or hepatic lipidosis
  • Pets on long-term medications known to affect the liver (e.g., phenobarbitone, NSAIDs, steroids)
  • Unexplained vomiting, lethargy, jaundice, or weight loss
  • Follow-up monitoring for pets with known liver disease

Understanding Your Results

Normal ALT in cats is typically 10–120 U/L, though reference ranges may vary by laboratory. In dogs, normal ALT is generally 10–70 U/L. Mild to moderate elevations (2–5x normal) may indicate early liver stress, drug reactions, or inflammatory conditions. Severe elevations (more than 5x normal) suggest significant liver cell necrosis or active hepatitis. Results should always be interpreted alongside other liver markers and clinical examination.
