Description

The Magnesium Serum test measures the level of magnesium in your pet’s blood, an essential electrolyte that supports muscle and nerve function, cardiac rhythm, enzyme activity, and bone metabolism in dogs and cats. Magnesium is the second most abundant intracellular cation and plays a vital role in over 300 enzymatic reactions.

Hypomagnesemia (low magnesium) is common in hospitalized dogs, occurring in approximately 35% of cases, and is often seen with critical illness, malnutrition, gastrointestinal disease, or prolonged diuretic therapy. In cats, hypermagnesemia (elevated magnesium) is less common but is associated with higher mortality rates, making this test particularly important in critically ill feline patients.

Normal ionized magnesium values are typically 0.5–1.0 mmol/L in both species. Serum magnesium levels below 1.89 mg/dL in dogs or 1.8 mg/dL in cats indicate hypomagnesemia. This test is especially critical in pets with congestive heart failure (CHF), where declining magnesium levels correlate with worsening prognosis.
